Once one has had to interact with the apparatchiks of the governmental regulatory cabal, it would be virtually impossible not to become, subsequently, a small government conservative.
The perverse incentives that the Government 'get the fat cats' is a creeping socialism that should rightly concern all citizens. To that end, the Government has no need for truth, because the ends justify the means. It is thus often cursorily content to cross the line of decency and integrity if it advances a narrative that may advance the trajectory of an apparatchik. Many careers and lives have been crushed without sympathy because the fat cats are well, not a part of the cabal.
Trump cannot help but be a boor, and, as President, he possibly harms the country with his attacks at the veracity of our governmental institutions. But at the other extreme, too many average citizens consider the Government as their source of salvation and opportunity, rather than an oppressor of free markets that thwarts personal advancement and promotes financial dependence.
